What is a custom glass perfume bottle?

A custom glass perfume bottle is a fragrance container manufactured from a brand-specific mould, rather than selected from a supplier''s stock catalogue. Custom bottles let a brand control the shape, weight, neck finish, decoration and closure system, and are the standard format used by prestige, indie and private-label fragrance houses.

Rango Packaging (Jiangsu Rango Packaging Co., Ltd., founded 2003) is a Chinese OEM/ODM manufacturer that produces custom and stock glass bottles for perfume, cosmetic and home-fragrance brands in 60+ countries. This guide answers the questions brands most often ask before placing an order.

How is the MOQ decided?

MOQ is set by the bottle weight and the furnace run size, not by the brand''s budget. A 100 ml heavy-wall perfume bottle (130–200 g) consumes far more glass per cycle than a 10 ml roll-on, so the practical minimum for a new mould is higher.

  • Stock shapes already in the catalogue: 3,000 – 5,000 pcs per SKU.
  • New private mould, lightweight bottles (≤ 50 ml): 10,000 pcs.
  • New private mould, heavy-wall bottles (50–100 ml): 15,000 – 30,000 pcs.

Decoration MOQs (spraying, hot-stamping, silk-screen) are usually lower and can be applied to a partial batch.

How much does a custom mould cost?

A perfume-bottle mould is a one-time tooling investment, typically USD 2,000 – 8,000, depending on:

  1. Cavity count — single-cavity for samples, multi-cavity for production.
  2. Bottle complexity — sharp edges, asymmetric shapes and thick bases all increase machining time.
  3. Neck type — crimp necks (FEA 15) are standard; screw threads add cost.
  4. Material — pre-hardened steel for short runs, hardened tool steel for long-life moulds.

Moulds remain the property of the brand and are stored at the factory for repeat orders.

What is the typical lead time?

A full custom project from brief to delivered cartons takes 3 – 4 months:

StageDuration
2D / 3D drawing approval5 – 10 days
Mould opening25 – 35 days
First sample (T1)7 days after mould
Sample revision (T2)10 – 15 days
Mass production35 – 60 days
Sea freight (Asia → EU/US)30 – 45 days

Express timelines are possible for stock shapes (4 – 6 weeks total).

What glass types are used for perfume?

  • Flint (clear soda-lime) — the industry standard. Excellent clarity, recyclable, compatible with most fragrance formulas.
  • Extra-flint / low-iron — higher transparency, used for prestige clear bottles.
  • Crystal glass (lead-free) — heavier and brighter; used for luxury and niche fragrances.
  • Frosted glass — flint glass with an acid-etched or sand-blasted surface.
  • Coloured glass — achieved through in-batch colouring (whole-glass colour) or post-spray (surface colour).

All Rango Packaging glass is lead-free and compliant with EU Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and US FDA 21 CFR 177 for cosmetic contact.

What decoration techniques are available?

A modern perfume bottle usually combines two to four of the following:

  • Spray coating — solid, gradient, frosted or soft-touch finishes.
  • UV electroplating — metallic gold, silver, rose-gold, gunmetal.
  • Hot stamping — gold/silver foil logos on the bottle or cap.
  • Silk-screen printing — opaque single-colour or multi-colour artwork.
  • Pad printing — for small or curved surfaces.
  • Laser engraving — permanent etched marks, often on caps.
  • Decal / water-transfer printing — full-colour photographic artwork.
  • Crystal / rhinestone inlay — for premium decorative caps.

What closure systems work with perfume bottles?

  • Crimp pump (FEA 15) — the standard fragrance system; the pump is crimped onto the neck and is non-removable.
  • Screw pump — refillable, often used for travel and refill formats.
  • Roll-on — for oil-based fragrances and attars.
  • Dropper — for serums and concentrated fragrances.
  • Surlyn / ABS / Zamac caps — magnetic, weighted or hollow, paired with an inner plastic collar.

How is quality controlled?

Each order goes through three QC stages:

  1. In-process QC (IPQC) — checks during forming and decoration for dimensional and visual defects.
  2. Final QC — AQL 2.5 inspection for major defects, AQL 4.0 for minor, on every batch.
  3. Pre-shipment inspection — third-party inspection (SGS, BV, Intertek) is supported on request.

Typical tests include: capacity tolerance ±2 %, neck dimensional check, internal pressure, thermal shock, pump compatibility and decoration adhesion (cross-cut tape test).

How are bottles packed and shipped?

  • Inner tray — EPE foam or moulded pulp, to protect decoration.
  • Master carton — 5-layer corrugated, max 15 kg per carton.
  • Pallet — standard EUR (1200×800 mm) or US (1200×1000 mm) pallets, shrink-wrapped.
  • Shipping — FOB Shanghai/Ningbo by default; FCA, CIF, DDP available.

A standard 20 ft container holds approximately 30,000 – 45,000 × 100 ml perfume bottles, depending on weight and pack format.

How do I start a project?

  1. Send a brief: capacity, target weight, reference images, decoration, target market, annual volume.
  2. Receive a quotation with mould cost, unit price and lead time within 48 hours.
  3. Approve 3D drawings and a digital render.
  4. Mould opening → T1 sample → revisions → mass production.
