MOQ is the first number that shapes a fragrance packaging project. It decides which bottles you can access, how much capital sits in inventory, and whether a custom design is realistic at your stage.
The standard: 5,000 pcs from existing molds
For bottles produced from an existing mold, the standard MOQ is 5,000 pcs per SKU. That figure is driven by production economics: a glass line must be set up, colour and coating batches mixed, and decoration jigs prepared. Below that quantity, setup cost dominates unit price.
Three sourcing routes
1. Stock bottles from existing molds
- MOQ: 5,000 pcs per SKU
- No tooling cost
- Fastest route to market
- Shape is shared with other brands
Best for new brands, line extensions, testing a market, or any project where speed matters more than a unique silhouette.
2. Semi-custom (existing mold + your decoration)
You keep the existing bottle shape but own the visual identity through coating colour, frosting, silk screen, hot stamping, a custom cap and a bespoke gift box. MOQ stays at 5,000 pcs, decoration adds cost per piece rather than tooling cost.
This is where most growing brands land. It delivers ~80% of the differentiation of a custom bottle at a fraction of the investment and lead time.
3. Full custom mold development
A brand-new mold means a bottle nobody else can buy. It requires a committed volume, because the tooling investment is only recovered across repeat production runs. Discuss the annual volume you can realistically commit before requesting a mold quotation — that number, not the design, determines whether the project makes sense.
MOQ per SKU, not per order
An important detail buyers often miss: MOQ applies per SKU. Three colours of the same bottle are three SKUs. Two capacities are two SKUs. If your total order is 6,000 pcs but split across four variants, you are asking for four production setups.
Plan your range accordingly: fewer variants at launch, more depth per variant.
Sampling before you commit
- Stock-mold samples: 7–15 days
- Samples with decoration: +7–10 days
- New custom mold: 35–55 days to first sample
Always approve a physical decorated sample before mass production is released.
Budgeting the order
Payment terms are 30% deposit and 70% balance before shipment. Build in the cost of caps, pumps, collars, inner trays and cartons — bottles alone are rarely the whole packaging bill. Ask for the full assembled unit cost and the carton/pallet specification so you can calculate landed cost, not just FOB price.
How to decide
| Situation | Recommended route |
|---|---|
| First launch, limited capital | Stock bottle, one or two SKUs |
| Established brand, needs identity | Semi-custom decoration |
| Proven repeat volume, needs exclusivity | Custom mold development |
The right MOQ strategy is the one that keeps cash in the business while the brand is still learning what sells. Most brands should earn their custom mold, not start with it.
